    When you get the gear set that is hard to get both sides matching , always get the drive side right. The coast is reverse and not under high loads. The pattern that is ideal splashes the oil out away as the tooth comes in. This vid nails ut

    This is the kind of thing I LOVE about machining. You don't need a multi thousands of dollars investment or specialized tooling. Just make your own, make it work for the few things you do and keep it simple. Great idea!

    I guess it is involute spline in that gear. You cut 90 deg. How do you think about that.

    • @superjeep47
      @superjeep47 Місяць тому

      When you look at the difference between an involute curve and a straight line its only .001” on typical axle splines. That works for 90 and 60 degree pressure angles.

    Great video, just found your channel. My father was a tool & Die maker from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. I inherited his lathe and purchased a mill about ten years ago. I was alway under the impression that axles were all hardened after splines were cut, is that not the case?

    • @superjeep47
      @superjeep47 Місяць тому

      That is how it is done in the OEM world but aftermarket you are often shortening an existing axle or using a pre hardened blank.

    I have been fighting a C3 Dana 44 for more than a week now. I love the car, hate the Dana 44. It's a dumb design to have to press on bearing on and off while constantly changing shims trying to get the pattern right. I am broke and should have just bought a rebuilt unit with a warranty thinking I could save money and do this myself. I thought I did everything right and still cant get the pinion depth and gear lash right. The big problem is the idiot manufacturer sent nothing but thick shims with the kit. the thinnest shim is .0102. The shims I pulled out of my old unit has a .0036 shim it it. unfortunately I damaged it pulling the race out.

You don't have to worry about wearing clutches or finding the stupid additive for the factory positraction setup.

    Another question, do you have a preference to using Dana 50 gears or JK Dana 44 gears when upgrading a Ford hp Dana 44? Your site says they're both about a 44% increase in strength. Are they both 5 cut gear sets? Or is the newer jk Dana 44 2 cut?

    • @motoboggin2619
      @motoboggin2619 9 місяців тому

      i read somewhere that all aftermarket ring and pinion gears are 2 cut. ive never had a jk gear set next to a ford gear set but they cant be much different i would stay stock or go dana 50 gears

    • @lol123321123321
      @lol123321123321 9 місяців тому

      @@motoboggin2619 yup. Imo most aftermarket gear sets I have seen are the old school 5 cut. It's an extremely expensive machining process so I'm assuming rather than get new equipment they just make 5 cut gears. On the other hand most all OEM brand name manufacture gears are the more modern 2 cut. I've Come to the conclusion there's no difference in strength. 5 cut gears set up cleaner imo

    • @lol123321123321
      @lol123321123321 9 місяців тому

      @@motoboggin2619 the jk Dana 44 uses a much larger pinion shaft. Absolutely won't work In a old school Dana 44 housing without the conversion bearings and clerancing the housing for the pinion slinger. I trust Mr. Jantz so using the conversion kit for the Dana 50 or JK 44 will both be about the same increase in strength.

    • @motoboggin2619
      @motoboggin2619 9 місяців тому

      @@lol123321123321 i wonder if the conversion bearings are weaker or failure prone, secondly i wonder if the housing between the pinion bearings is now the weakest link, probably not but id hate to find out.

  • @lol123321123321
    @lol123321123321 Рік тому

    Thoughts on just running no slinger at all and just running pinion depth shims? I feel like the slinging of the gear oil off the pinion head itself may be adequate enough.

    I have no idea what was just explained. Just yesterday, I tried to do a ring and pinion gear swap. I was told I needed some special tools. My question is, I want to do a ring and pinion gear swap. Both gears are factory installed. Do I need to do depth and lash if I am only swapping out the pinion and the ring gear? Thanks
